Stage actor Aydın briefly detained by Turkish police over social media messages

Outspoken stage actor Orhan Aydın was briefly detained in İstanbul on Tuesday over social media messages critical of the Turkish government and the president.

“I was taken to Beyoğlu police station due to my social media messages. Presidency and Democracy!” Aydın tweeted on Tuesday morning.

Last year Aydın was given suspended prison sentence of 11 months, 20 days for insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on social media.

Aydın’s sharing of a drawing by cartoonist Carlos Latuff on Erdoğan’s trip to Cuba was among the evidence of insult.

The court also said another of Aydın’s postings hinted at alleged similarities between Erdoğan and Adolf Hitler. Aydın confirmed the decision on Twitter, asking: “This is justice, huh?” (turkishminute.com)
