Suspected Islamist extremists on Sunday opened fire at an upscale Turkish restaurant in Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, killing 20 people, including a Turkish national, and wounding eight others, BBC reported.
The attack on the Aziz İstanbul Turkish eatery, which is popular with foreign tourists in Ouagadougou, was the second such attack in the city in the last two years.
While nobody claimed responsibility for the attack, the police counter-attack of which lasted until early Monday morning, Communication Minister Remi Dandjinou told journalists that the two extremists were killed and that the victims had varying nationalities.
According to the Burkina Faso police, gunmen arrived at the restaurant on motorcycles and shot randomly at customers who were dining in the restaurant’s outdoor seating.
A similar terrorist attack at a nearby café in January 2016 left 30 people dead in the country, which has been battling against homegrown and foreign terrorist threats. (turkishminute.com)
