Nephrology Professor Süleyman Türk has been asking for prayers for his elderly relatives who were imprisoned as part of the government’s post-coup witch hunt.
Türk is, too, a victim of the relentless purge as he was dismissed as a professor from the Konya-based Selçuk University, on Sept. 3, 2016.
“My father Hacı Mustafa Türk (81 [years old]), my uncle A. Canseven (67), my brother M Türk (59) will have their hearings on March 25. They expect your prayers. They say hi to you all,” Türk tweeted on Friday.
Turkey survived a military coup attempt on July 15 that killed over 240 people. Immediately after the putsch, the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government along with Turkey’s autocratic President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan pinned the blame on the Gülen movement.
Since July 15, Turkey has detained over 94,200 people and jailed in excess of 46,870, primarily over links to the Gülen movement and on charges of terrorism and coup plotting.
The government has proven not to be differentiating people regardless of their ages or medical condition when jailing them over post-coup charges. Media reports and tips submitted to Turkey Purge have revealed on multiple cases that elderly citizens, cancer patients, children and even pregnant women are not able to escape from imprisonment once they face investigation.
