Actor sentenced to 11 months in prison for sharing Erdoğan cartoon

Actor and columnist Orhan Aydın.

Orhan Aydın, a famous Turkish actor and columnist at Sol newspaper, was given suspended prison sentence of 11 months and 20 days for a cartoon he shared on social media.

An İstanbul court handed down the verdict on charges of insulting Turkey’s autocratic President Recep Tayyin Erdoğan on Thursday. Aydin’s sharing of a drawing by cartoonist Carlos Latuff on Erdoğan’s trip to Cuba was among the evidence of insult.

The court also said Aydın’s another posting hinted at alleged similarities between Erdogan and Adolf Hitler. Aydin confirmed the decision on Twitter on Thursday, asking: “Is this justice, ha?” (turkeypurge.com) April 7, 2017
