5 suspicious deaths at Gebze women’s prison in 2nd half of 2016

At least 5 people have suspiciously died at the women’s prison in Kocaeli’s Gebze district over the second half the last year, Republican Peoples’ Party (CHP) deputy Gamze Akkuş noted, questioning possible negligence by authorities.

In a parliamentary question to the Justice Minister Bekir Bozdağ, Akkuş said she has been receiving an increasing number of calls about the human rights abuses since the government announced an emergency rule after the July 15 coup attempt.

She said women at Gebze prison complain that they are often denied medicine and permission to see doctor.

“Has been any legal action taken against prison officials regarding 5 deaths in six months? Has been any investigation launched to reveal if the prison management was negligent with regards to the incidents of deaths?” Akkuş asked.

More than 21 people have reportedly committed suicide either after they were imprisoned in post-coup operations or linked to the alleged coup plotters outside prison since July 15.

The relatives of most of them claim that the detainees are not the kind of people to commit suicide, shedding doubt on the official narrative. Rumors also have it that some of the detainees were killed after being subjected to torture under custody. (turkeypurge.com) Feb. 18, 2017
