Turkish police mopped the floor with Sultan Özakça and Esra Özakça, the mother and wife of Semih Özakça, an educator who was jailed after going on a hunger strike in protest of his dismissal with a government decree in the aftermath of a July 15, 2016 coup attempt.
Özakça’s wife and mother were reportedly hospitalized after they were dragged on the floor for meters and beaten up by a group of police officers while protesting the arrest of the educator.
Semih Özakça and Nuriye Gülmen, a Turkish academic, made the headlines after they went on a hunger strike to protest government purges issued in the aftermath of the coup attempt.
They were detained on the 75th day of their protest and then sent to jail for “trying to trigger widespread protests” in Turkey.
Gülmen was fired from Konya Selçuk University for her alleged ties to the Gülen group, which the Turkish government accuses of masterminding the coup attempt.
Özakça was a teacher at a primary school in Turkey’s eastern province of Mardin before he was purged over ties to a terrorist organization. (turkeypurge.com) May 31, 2017
