Turkish academic announces he will not vote for any woman candidate in local elections

A professor of aviation and space sciences at Turkey’s Necmettin Erbakan University has announced that he will not vote for any female candidate in municipal elections scheduled for March 2019.

Professor Mehmet Karalı defended his position by arguing that it is much more important to be a good housewife and raise children than being a mayor, minister or businesswoman.

“I find certain policies towards family wrong. It is much more important to raise good a good child and be a good housewife than being a minister, mayor or a successful businesswoman. In local elections, I will not vote for any female candidate,” Karalı tweeted on Friday after saying that he had an announcement to make.

He has since then shut down his Twitter account.
