As a government-led crackdown on Kurdish politicians continue, one more deputy from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) has been detained on terror charges. HDP Şanlıurfa deputy İbrahim Ayhan was detained at Şanlıurfa Airport on Monday morning on charges of making the propaganda of a terrorist organization. After a brief detention Ayhan was released in the same day.
Turkey has stepped up its crackdown on Kurdish politicians in recent months. Trustees have been appointed to dozens of municipalities in the country’s predominantly Kurdish Southeast, while hundreds of local Kurdish politicians have been arrested on terror charges. There are currently 13 HDP deputies behind bars.
The developments have attracted widespread criticism from the region and Western countries. (turkishminute.com) Feb. 27, 2017
