Leftist actor Atay released after brief detention in Turkey’s Muğla province

Barış Atay

Turkish actor Barış Atay who was detained by gendarmerie forces in the Dalyan district of Muğla on Wednesday night, was released on Thursday after testifying to a prosecutor.

The actor did not previously attend a testimony hearing in an ongoing case, after which he was ordered to be detained.

Atay, who is also a leftist activist, is known for his critical stance against the Turkish government and Turkey’s autocratic President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

In November 2013, Atay was detained in İstanbul on accusations of links to the socialist hacker group RedHack and was taken to Ankara for questioning along with 13 other suspects. Three days later he was released upon a ruling from an Ankara court. (turkishminute.com) June 15, 2017
