Increasing individual armament in Turkey leads to 1,575 deaths in 2017

At least 1,575 people have lost their lives in 2,525 firearm incidents this year until September 22, 2017 according to a report released by Turkey’s Umut Foundation ahead of September 28 Individual Disarmament Day.

Umut Foundation’s report has showed the rate of murder caused by personal armament has increased by 27 percent this year as compared to 2016. Last year, there were 990 cases of murder by personal firearms. The reports has also said that there are 25 million personal firearms in Turkey and 85 percent of them are unregistered.

The Umut Foundation is a Turkish civil society organisation which aims at drawing attention to the danger of individual armament for a society, to develop solution offers and to place pressure regarding their implementation.
