Belgian PM Michel calls to end Turkey’s accession negotiations with the EU

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel.

Belgian Prime Minister Charles Michel has said that Turkey’s autocratic President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was moving away European values and called for an end to Turkey’s accession negotiations with the European Union (EU).

Belgian PM Michel said on Monday that “The EU is dependent on Turkey only with regard to the refugee crisis. Turkey makes us dependent on itself over our weakest point. As a matter of fact, Turkey is dependent on us economically but we are not threatening them like they threaten us.”

Underlining that Turkey demanded 3 billion-euro fund from the EU and was yet to comply with the desired terms and conditions, Michel called for an end to Turkey’s EU accession negotiations.

Prime Minister Michel pointed out that President Erdoğan was moving away European values, and that his statements over the past few days are unacceptable as he compared the Netherlands and Germany with the Nazis.

Belgian Prime Minister has also stressed that “The refugee deal with Turkey must definitely be questioned. We must work to protect our borders and guarantee the security of Europe.”
