Two inmates in Ankara’s Sincan prison have been forced to wear orange T-shirts along with loose trousers during meetings with their lawyer, according to media. Speaking to toplumsalhukuk.net online forum on Friday, an anonymous lawyer said his/her clients were forced to wear special uniforms during recent visits.
“I visited two of my clients, one convicted and one arrested pending trial on judicial investigations, in Sincan T Type prison last week. Both appeared during the visits with orange T-shirts that bore the word CİK, and blue, loose trousers. When I asked about it, they said: ‘There is no problem with not wearing these in the holding cell but, we must put them on whenever we are let out of the cell during family or lawyer visits or for transactions regarding mails,” the lawyer said.
“My client told me that prison labors are required to wear those uniforms as well. Also, arrestees in the L and T Type prisons appear during hearings through the voice and video informatics system (SEGBİS).”
Turkey’s autocratic President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in mid-July that people detained over coup charges should wear a single outfit, like in Guantanamo. “When they appear in court, let’s make them appear in one-type uniform like in Guantanamo,” he said during an Istanbul rally to mark the first anniversary of the July 15, 2016 coup attempt.
Erdoğan’s proposal came only a week after one of the suspects on trial for an assassination attempt against Erdoğan on the night of a failed coup was thrown out of the courtroom for wearing a T-shirt bearing the word “hero” because it caused tension between the parties during the hearing.
