Turkish government detains pro-Kurdish HDP deputy Sibel Yiğitalp

Sibel Yiğitalp

Sibel Yiğitalp, pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) deputy for Diyarbakır province has announced on her Twitter account early Thursday that “I am being detained in front of my house at the moment”.

It was reported that Yiğitalp engaged in preparations for the rally to be held at Diyarbakır’s İstasyon Square on September 17.

There are currently 11 HDP deputies behind bars in Turkey after the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) government stepped up a crackdown on Kurdish politicians last fall. Trustees have been appointed to dozens of municipalities in the country’s predominantly Kurdish Southeast, while hundreds of local Kurdish politicians have been arrested on terror charges.
