Turkish court jails Sevinç Bozan, co-mayor of Mardin’s Artuklu district

A Turkish court in Mardin province has jailed the co-mayor of Mardin’s Artuklu district, Sevinç Bozan on Friday. It was reported that Bozan was detained in İzmir’s Balçova district on September 14 and was brought to Mardin Courthouse following procedures at police directorate.

Bozan was later referred to court where she remanded in detention for alleged “membership to a terrorist organization.” She was sent to Mardin E Type Closed Prison. The government had appointed a trustee to the Municipality of Artuklu on December 13, 2016.

Turkey has stepped up political pressure on Kurdish politicians as the government has appointed trustees to the management of dozens of municipalities and arrested at least 74 co-mayors and 10 deputies from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).
