Imprisoned HDP deputy says being held under tight isolation

HDP deputy Meral Danış Beştaş.

Pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) Adana deputy Meral Danış Beştaş said she is being kept under tight isolation in the prison.

As part of a parliamentary question she submitted from Silivri prison, Beştaş said she has been kept under solitary confinement for the past 15 days.

Meanwhile, an international delegation formed by the EU Turkey Civic Commission (EUTCC) is planning to visit HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş in Edirne Prison on Friday. The delegation includes members of the European Parliament Costas Mavrides and Julie Ward and number of European politicians, journalists, members of European NGOs and academicians.  The delegation will be accompanied by Ayşe Berktay from HDP Party Assembly and HDP deputy Hüda Kaya. The delegation is planing to make a statement in front of Edirne Prison.

Turkey has stepped up its crackdown on Kurdish politicians in recent months. Trustees have been appointed to dozens of municipalities in the country’s predominantly Kurdish Southeast, while hundreds of local Kurdish politicians have been arrested on terror charges.

Turkey currently keeps 11 HDP deputies including the party co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ behind bars. (with the turkeypurge.com) Feb. 16, 2017
