Erdoğanist-Islamist scholars from Turkey announce their support for al-Qaradawi

Yousef al-Qaradawi

Pro-Erdoğan political Islamist scholars from Turkey have released a joint written statement on Thursday to give support for the controversial chairman of the Qatar-based International Union of Muslim Scholars Yousef al-Qaradawi.

Signed by Erdoğanist Islamist scholars, radical preachers and writers, including Ahmet Ağırakca, Yusuf Ziya Kavakçı, Ramazan Kayan, Nureddin Yıldız, Ahmet Taşgetiren and Ali Rıza Demircan, the statement said that “We declare that we are with the Qatari state and scholars like Qaradawi, who are against imperialism. We demand that the irrational action against them ends,” the statement said.

Praising Qaradawi, the Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas, Erdoğanist Islamist scholars stated that “Accusing these two distinguished movements [Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas] as terrorists, and counting everyone close to them as enemy, is tantamount to wanting to destroy everyone who thinks of the Ummah and opposes imperialism… Yousef al-Qaradawi and other scholars like him are the honor and the conscience of this Ummah.”

It was also stated that US President Donald Trump’s visit to Saudi Arabia became the reason for the blockade against Qatar.

On June 9, a joint statement by Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt and the UAE accused 59 people and 12 organizations in Qatar of being “linked to terror.” The list included Qaradawi and Qatar’s former interior minister Abdullah bin Khalid.

Saudi state news agency SPA had said that Qatar embraces multiple terrorist and sectarian groups aimed at disrupting stability in the region, including the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) and al-Qaeda, and constantly promotes the messages and schemes of these groups through their media.
